More and more these days, we are being encouraged to look at labels. Long gone are the days of trusting your food and body products, and their sources and just popping something in your cart. I see people in the grocery store stopping to take a look and becoming aware of what is in that product.

Just as we should be concerned with what we are eating, we should be just as concerned about what we are putting all over our skin-our biggest organ.

There is a lot to consider with beauty and health products. More and more research is being published about the harmful effects of skin care ingredients-there are no regulations.  Some (most) skin care products are a wasteland of toxic ingredients and no one has cared to look at the effects...until NOW.

Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, CANCER, infertility, endocrine dysfunction are just a few of the major health issues that can be onset from these ingredients. As consumers, it's time to get smart, become aware and slowly but surely, clear out the toxins from our cabinets and cosmetic bags. Couple that with the ingredients in our food, and there is no wonder why cancer rates are at a all-time high and we are seeing so much dis-ease in this country.

My pendulum doesn't swing far left or right, and yes, I still have some products lurking in my collection that I need to find an alternative for, but all of that will come in time... Roma wasn't built in a day. Becoming aware is the first step and although you may not be able to part with your favorite lipstick or gloss or deodorant, right away, just knowing, empowers us to make better choices for us and our families.

Here is a small list of some common chemicals in our bathrooms, that we should look for. I will add more as I go here, but these are the most common and here is the WHY.

PARABENS:  preservatives used in a wide variety of personal care products and foods, to prevent the growth of microbes.

THING TO LOOK FOR ON A LABEL: Methyl, Ethyl, Propyl, Isobutyl parabens.

WHERE IS IT FOUND? Can be found in deodorants, anti-perspirants, shampoos, conditioners, self-tanners, lotions and makeup

WHY DON'T WE WANT ON OUR SKIN? Endocrine disruption (that delicate thyroid gland), CANCER, developmental and reproductive toxicity. AVOID IN PREGNANT WOMEN AND CHILDREN.  Look for PARABEN-FREE on the label. If a company does not use parabens, they are proud to say so and usually it is written on the product.

PHTHALATES: A group of chemicals found in plastics and vinyls. Used as a preservative in cosmetics and skin care products.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR ON A LABEL: Diethylhexly phthalate, Dibutyl phthalate, Dimethyl phthalate, Diethyl phthalate, frangrance

WHERE IS IT FOUND? Household cleaners, lotions, plastics, detergents, nail polish and lipsticks.

WHY DON"T WE WANT ON OUR SKIN? Endocrine disruption (see a pattern, here?), developmental and reproductive toxicity, CANCER. Supports development of asthma and allergies.

SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE: Surfactant, thickener, emulsifier and stabilizer.

THING TO LOOK FOR ON A LABEL: Monodedcyl ester,  Sulfuric acid, Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate.

WHERE IS IT FOUND? Soaps, shampoos, detergents

WHY DON'T WE WANT ON OUR SKIN? Irritates skin, eyes, lungs.

FRAGRANCE: a beautiful blend of sometimes over 3000 chemicals.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR ON A LABEL: Parfum, fragrance

WHERE IS IT FOUND? Perfumes, colognes, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, hair care products, etc. etc. etc...

WHY DON'T WE WANT IT ON OUR SKIN? can trigger allergies, migraines, and asthma symptoms.

PROPYLENE GLYCOL: alcohol used in antifreeze, cosmetics and household products. Used as a skin conditioner, a fragrance ingredient.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR ON A LABEL: propolyne glycol, dihydroxypropane, Hydroxypropanol; Methyethyl glycol

WHERE IS IT FOUND: hair care products, moisturizers, lotions

WHY DON'T WE WANT ON OUR SKIN? Irritant and allergen.

PETROLATUM: mineral oil used as a barrier on skin.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR ON A LABEL: Petroleum, mineral oil

WHERE IS IT FOUND? Hair care products, lotions, moisturizers

WHY DON'T WE WANT ON OUR SKIN? Does not allow skin to breathe, skin irritation, allergies and cancer causing.

These are just a few major ones and I will expound on other ingredients as I go. No need rush out and spend a ton of money on new products, but getting informed is most important. KNOW BETTER, DO BETTER. Our products are created to "Lighten The Toxic Load" and sometimes just swapping out ONE product can get you started.

Look for labels that say paraben-free, no parabens, no sodium lauryl sulfate and stick with organic (when possible, both in your food and skin care).

There are a lot of local companies producing beautiful skin care without the harmful ingredients. Seek us out. Learn as you go and have fun with it.

There is a lot ot be happy about and feel good about, once you are empowered with the information and know what to look for. It feels good, it smells better and you know what your putting on your skin are #productswithapurpose.

A Celestial Body is an empowered body...

The "WISE" of switching to natural deodorant..

We've been doing it for years...slathering commercial deodorant products across our underarms, so we don't sweat or stink. It's what our mothers did. It's what our friends did. It's what we did. No one questioned it.

Then one day we learn that all the harmful ingredients are actually causing silent issues in our body and we want to stop using it...but can we?

This was my struggle and as I am moving through this journey of health, I find that I am not the only one who is having the issue.

So here's the why..

Aluminum and all the other lovely ingredients (propylene glycol. phlatates, parabens, etc, etc, etc)  put in conventional deodorant, are designed to make us STOP sweating and stop stinking. With that, they are also introducing endocrine disruptors, chemicals that cause cancer and things our bodies have no idea what to do with.  We foster Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and a myriad of other health issues (for more on that, check out this article, by Dr. Mercola)

Our bodies are designed to sweat. Our skin and underarms are an entry AND a exit. Just as we shouldn't be clogging our skin with mineral oil or petroleum products because our skin can't breathe, the same goes for our delicate underarm area.

So what happens when we give up the white stuff? Our underarms say "ahhhhhh" and they start to release. Yep, they release all that build up of toxins that we've been suppressing for years. Our lymph nodes can function, our thyroid takes a deep breath, our livers don't have so much to process and the list of functions go on. But up closer to our noses, something else is going on...WE STINK!

This is our body's detox process. All that is being released and it isn't a good situation for us and the people who have to smell us. How do we fix it?

Switching over is not an easy task for all. Finding a deodorant that is going to allow that area to breathe, while also protecting against the odor is key. You don't have to use CB products (although it DOES work and it is good), but you do have to find one that does work for you. Yup, don't want to get so grave, but your life and health basically depends on it! It's IMPORTANT.

However, after a few weeks, and as your body gets adjusted, you may feel confident, loving your new product, etc...and then the smell comes back. This is NATURAL!!! And HEALTHY!  it just means that we are still detoxing. Sometimes taking a look at the foods you eat (onions, shallots, garlic, etc) could be causing some smell, but maybe it's just going through its cycle.

DON'T GO BACK TO CONVENTIONAL DEODORANT! Our deodorant contains Kaolin Clay-smooths skin and absorbs, Arrowroot, absorbs the odors, coconut oil is the base that provides a natural anti-bacterial, VERY small amount of baking soda for pH balance (2%) and a beautiful blend of essential oils. IT WORKS, we promise.

We also offer a "Pit Stop" an underarm detox kit. This was created, for the possible recurrence of the body odor. Its a natural cycle and we can help with it. Read how it works on the products page.

We have been through the process, know the struggle, first hand and have created a solution. As always, we are here with any questions or guidance in detoxing those pits!  Winter/Fall is the best time to make the switch. We are here with you, every step of the way!

We offer in-home, fun, wellness parties, for workshops on all of our products- Pit Detoxes, Skin Food masks, Sugar scrubs, and muchmore!

Cacao Ceremony - Movement Lab

We joined Chris at Movement Lab for a Shamanic Chocolate experience.

Here was the invitation:

Fellow conscious movers,
Come join us on a sacred journey of liberation, connection, and celebration as Chris leads his last cacao ceremony before departing for Asia. Ancient civilizations like the Olmecs and Aztecs used cacao to facilitate connection with their gods and uplift their spirits. We will use the spirit of this amazing plant to unleash the divine creatures within ourselves and connect authentically with our fellow human beings. If you love chocolate, love life, or are looking for a catalyst of transformation we strongly encourage you to come explore cacao's profound uplifting nature!

We will dance and stomp, sing and shout, explore the loving power of touch, and tap into our primal nature as the sacred cacao medicine liberates our spirits. This ceremony is open to everyone! Please feel free to bring your friends, your strengths and your imperfections, any instruments, and your good vibes. Best of all the ceremony is for a good cause. Chris will donate a portion of all proceeds to benefit the education of orphaned and at-risk children in Rishikesh, India through the Ramana's Garden charitable organization where he used to volunteer.

What better day than today to celebrate your amazing life!?!

Eating cacao makes you happy! It contains phenylethylamine which controls pleasure and the feelings you get when you are in love. It also acts as a stimulant and can improve mental alertness. Cacao also contains serotonin and dopamine – which also stimulate good moods and ‘pleasure’ feelings.

Anandomide is also found in cacao. It’s present in the brain as an endogenous substance and interacts with cannabinoid receptors. Cacao also contains great levels of magnesium, which is an essential mineral during times of stress and helps you to feel more relaxed. It also contains manganese, zinc, calcium and potassium.
